Deauville

08.02.2017

As a team of hardcore foodies, we have compiled a list of the world’s best cities for food! In this post, Carine, HR Manager at YSeventy7 shares some culinary delights you can find in her hometown. Read on and be prepared to salivate.

Deauville is a small town in Normandy, regarded as one of the most prestigious seaside resorts in the whole of France and often referred to as the Parisian Riviera because it’s the closest seaside resort to Paris (approximately 2 hours away). Parisians flock to Deauville not only for the heavenly beaches but also for gastronomic heaven!

Deauville is famous for its shellfish such as Scallops, Mussels, Lobsters and Oysters which are found freshly caught in every restaurant in the area.

Not only famous for fish, we are also well known for meat. The Deauvillais (demonym for the people of Deauvulle meat eat a lot of duck and poultry. There is even a specialty of duck called “Canard a la Rouennaise”, a specific duck from a town call Rouen.

If you don’t speak French, I can guarantee you’ll know the meaning of ‘fromage’ and we have a serious repuatation when it comes to our beloved fromage so it’s no surprise to find A LOT of cheese. We produce a lot of it such as Camembert, Livarot and Pont L’Evêque. If you’re at a French person’s home and they bring out the cheese before dessert, don’t cry inside for fear of not having dessert, in France cheese is served between the main course and dessert.

Apples are a big deal in Deauville and there are lots and lots of them. In fact there are so many apples that the Deauvillaise people discovered many different ways to use them.

For desserts, there is a beautiful apple tart that can be served with ice cream. We are also known for Calvados and Ciders. Typically, during weddings we drink “Trou Normand” which is a glass of Calvados served with apple ice cream that is served in between dishes to clear our palate.

Our food is very rich because we use everything we produce such as cream, butter and cheese and of course we need a “Trou Normand” to clear the palate!!

That’s all from me this time and I hope you’ll visit my beautiful little town.
